 | SJV seminarians defeat priests and SPS teams - 5/1/2009 Seminarians at Saint John Vianney College Seminary claimed two victories at the second annual invitational basketball tournament of seminarians, priests, and Catholic students at Guardian Angels Church and School in Chaska on April 24.
The seminarians at SJV at the University of St. Thomas beat the seminarians of the St. Paul Seminary, and then crushed the priests of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. That was on Friday, witnessed by Archbishop John Nienstedt and about 400 parishioners from around the west metro area.
Last year, six teams played in the tournament, conceived and organized by Nick VanDenBroeke, then a seminarian at SJV. This year Nick, now a seminarian at SPS and playing on its team, was joined by Mike Richelsen, a member of G.A.’s team, in organizing the invitational tournament, with 12 teams participating.
Special thanks go to Tom Dahl who refereed at most of the games and remained unruffled by occasional player discontent.
Friday’s game between the archdiocese’s two seminaries and the priests enjoyed a crowd of 400 fans, many of whom attended the tailgating party beforehand.
If you didn’t make it to the tournament this year, make sure you come next year.
